Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

A gentle treatment protocol to drain excess fluid from the tissues

What is MLD?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle and specialised treatment protocol that consists of very light, rhythmical and pumping hand movements to stretch the skin. The treatment is aimed at stimulating the lymphatic system to drain more efficiently. MLD can aid relaxation via its link to the muscular and nervous systems and is also believed to improve the immune system. It sits comfortably in both, the complementary and the medical world. As such, MLD can be as beneficial after knee or hip replacement surgery as it can be after cosmetic procedures to reduce the post-op swelling and assist the healing process.

As a women’s health practitioner, my particular area of interest is helping breast or gynaecological cancer patients whose lymphatic system may have been compromised after chemotherapy, surgery or radiotherapy. Swelling can subsequently develop in arms or legs as a result of lymph nodes or vessels being removed or damaged. This condition is called lymphoedema. Early diagnosis is crucial and, whilst lymphoedema cannot be cured at the moment, it is very manageable with compression garments, MLD, exercise, skin care and breathing exercises. I love sharing my professional knowledge and empowering patients to adjust their mind-set so they own their lymphoedema rather than the other way around.

I was trained in MLD and lymphoedema management to an advanced level at the prestigious International Vodder School in Austria and feel passionate about developing individual treatment plans for all my lymphoedema patients. Apart from hands-on MLD treatment, this includes giving advice and measuring for made to measure compression garments. I work closely with GPs and a variety of compression garment suppliers to ensure patients get a garment that suits their specific needs. Nowadays there is such a great selection of fabrics and colours available and more often than not, these can be obtained on prescription.
